Description

On the night of January 5th and the morning of January 6th, every Spanish table has a roscón de Reyes: a ring of soft, sweet bread, traditionally scented with orange blossom and citrus and decorated like a crown with candied fruit and sugar. It celebrates the Three Kings, and it is the last, most beloved sweet of the Christmas season. Ours is the classic plain roscón, with no filling: made by hand, in small numbers, to order, with orange blossom water and lemon and orange zest in the dough, and topped with candied fruit, our own homemade candied orange and bakery sugar.

Making a roscón takes us 18 to 24 hours, from the slow-rising dough to the shaping, decorating and baking. The crumb is meant to be soft, airy and golden, with a gentle sweetness and, as tradition asks, a citrus aroma. Nothing is made in advance. Tradition says that the roscón hides a surprise, and that the person who finds the bean pays for next year’s cake. We never bake anything inside: the figurine and the bean always come wrapped separately, in a little bag, so you can hide them yourself before serving.

How ordering works. The roscón is seasonal: we deliver from November 25, in time for Thanksgiving, to January 10 (no delivery on January 1), and reservations open on November 1. Each one is made to order. Please order at least 5 days before you want it; from January 2 you can order until noon (ET) the day before, while there are roscones left for that day. Choose your delivery day in the calendar on this page. We make a maximum of 10 per day across all orders (15 on December 24 and 31, 20 on January 5 and 6), so book early. The last days to order are December 19 for Christmas Eve and December 26 for New Year’s Eve; for January 5 and 6, order by noon the day before. Orders placed less than 72 hours before delivery can’t be changed or cancelled. The roscón is $65; on special dates it is $75 (December 24, 25 and 31) and $80 (January 5 and 6), and the calendar shows the price of each day before you add it to the cart. The order deadlines and the story of the roscón are on our Roscón de Reyes page.

How to serve. Serve at room temperature, in generous slices, on the morning of January 6th, with a cup of hot chocolate (chocolate a la taza is the classic partner) or coffee. Share it with the family and see who finds the surprise.

Storage. Best enjoyed fresh, within two to three days. Store it in an airtight container at room temperature, or covered with a clean cloth. Do not refrigerate it: the crumb dries out. On the second or third day, 3 to 4 minutes in a 300 °F oven brings back the soft crumb.

Delivery. We deliver by hand, on the day you choose, in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties; delivery is $15. Somewhere else in Florida? Message us on WhatsApp before you order.

FAQ

When is the roscón available?

We deliver from November 25 to January 10, every day except January 1. Reservations open on November 1; before that, join the list on this page and we will write to you as soon as they open. Then choose your delivery day in the calendar on this page.

How early should I order?

At least 5 days ahead until January 1 (for Christmas Eve, by December 19). For deliveries from January 2 to January 10, you can order until noon (ET) the day before, while they last. We make a maximum of 10 per day across all orders (15 on December 24 and 31, 20 on January 5 and 6), and those days fill first.

Where do you deliver?

By hand, on the day you choose, in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, for $15. We deliver in Florida only. Somewhere else in Florida? Message us on WhatsApp before you order.

Do you make it with whipped cream (nata)?

No. The original roscón has no filling, and as a home bakery (Florida cottage food) we don’t make cream-filled cakes.

Is it the same as a rosca de reyes?

They are cousins: the Mexican rosca and the Spanish roscón share January 6 and the hidden surprise. Ours is the Spanish one: round, with no filling, scented with orange blossom and topped with homemade candied orange, candied fruit and bakery sugar.

What is the tradition of the roscón?

It is eaten on January 6th, Three Kings Day. A figurine and a bean are hidden inside: whoever finds the figurine is crowned king, and whoever finds the bean pays for next year’s cake. Ours come in their own little bag so you can hide them yourself. The bean is for the game, not for eating; small parts, keep them away from children under 3.

What if my day is sold out?

Pick another day in the calendar: December 24 and 31 and January 5 and 6 go first. Or try our handmade ensaimada mallorquina, also made to order.
